Teeth Whitening

Whitening

Everybody loves a bright, white smile. Brushing and flossing a minimum of twice daily, and having regular teeth cleanings can all help your smile stay white. However, if you decide you would like to go beyond regular care to make your smile look brighter, our office offers a take-home Zoom! Whitening kit.

Benefits of Teeth Whitening

  • Improves your appearance
  • Boosts confidence
  • An affordable way to improve your smile quickly

Take-Home Teeth Whitening System

This method offers the comfort and convenience of whitening at home along with professional results!  There is a Nite-White kit ( to be used overnight) and a Day-White kit ( to be used for a short period of time during the day).

First, our team will take impressions of your teeth. Then we will create two custom whitening “trays” that are a perfect fit for your teeth.  Once these are created, we will explain how the at-home whitening works.  Each kit contains the custom trays, 6 syringes of whitening gel and a shade guide which will help you get to the desired shade of whiteness.  We will give detailed instructions on how to use the kit, as well as answer any questions you may have.

The trays hold the  bleaching solution that will gently lighten the shade of your teeth over a period of seven to fourteen days. Every few months you can “touch up” your whitening by wearing your custom whitening trays for a period of time over a day or two to keep your teeth at their whitest shade.

Take-home Whitening vs. Over-the-Counter Whitening Treatments

These methods do not offer the effectiveness or the safety that a professional treatment can offer you. Each of these treatment methods has a drawback that can impact the shade of your teeth and your oral health.

Teeth Whitening Strips

Teeth whitening strips are thin, flexible plastic strips with a thin film of hydrogen peroxide bleaching on one side. These can be purchased at the pharmacy or grocery store.

Whitening strips contain a lower concentration of whitening agent than professional whitening procedures and are more difficult to use on all your teeth. This means that your smile may not have the consistent, bright results you are hoping to see.

Paint-On Teeth Whitening

Paint-on teeth whitening allows you to apply a tooth bleaching agent directly to your teeth without an appliance or strip. You simply “paint” the whitener onto the surface of clean, dry teeth and wait about 30 minutes while the paint turns to a dry film. To remove this film, you simply brush your teeth with a toothbrush.

Paint-on whitening products require twice-daily applications to be effective. The duration of treatment will vary, and the agent is a lower concentration than professional procedures that whiten teeth. Although fine for a quick solution before an important event, the results may not last as long as you hope.

Whitening Toothpaste

All toothpastes help remove surface stains from your teeth through the action of mild abrasives.  Unlike professional whitening, these products do not alter the intrinsic color of teeth. Depending on the cause of your tooth discoloration, you may not experience lasting results or even see the shade you are hoping for. Occasionally teeth whitening toothpastes can have minor side effects like sensitivity or gum irritation.

ARE THERE CASES WHEN TEETH WHITENING DOESN’T WORK?

Teeth whitening does not work for everyone.

In cases when the teeth are yellow because of calculus ( tartar) build-up, the calculus will be whitened along with any exposed tooth.  When the calculus is removed by your hygienist, the actual tooth will remain the colour it was prior to bleaching.  This is why it is so important to have your teeth cleaned professionally prior to whitening.

In addition, there are other cases in which teeth whitening may not work, including:

  • Teeth that are gray, or dark brown in colour
  • Dental restorations such as fillings, veneers, crowns, and bridges do not react to whitening,  making the darker restorations more noticeable as the teeth around them whiten
  • If instructions for the at-home kit are not followed properly, or the bleach is not left on long enough

We’ll be happy to consult with you regarding whitening and answer any questions you may have.
